Soft eyes, gentle demeanor, tender interactions…If it gets any better than this, you'll have to prove it to me!
My favorite Llanview cop Lieutenant John McBain must have done some serious soul-searching after his previous encounter with the woman in his life, beautiful attorney Evangeline Williamson. He must have remembered how disappointed she looked and sounded after flying through storms and what have you just to get back to John and their wonderful new relationship a day earlier than expected. And even though she'd carried herself with dignity and class, he could see that she was hurt to find another woman so comfortably seated on his bed that night. Their relationship of no strings attached wasn't working for her anymore, her telephone message said, which meant that he was about to lose her.
And he knew it.
So John did what he had to do. He looked into his heart and soul and realized that “no strings attached” wasn't quite working for him, either. He wanted a few strings with Evangeline after all.
So John asked her to meet him at the Country Club, where he sat nervously studying his watch, waiting for Evangeline to show up. When she did, she looked over at him sadly, no doubt thinking that what they had was over. She took a deep breath and walked over to where he sat waiting. He thanked her for coming and they sat. Before Evangeline knew what was happening, John pulled a string out of his pocket, tied it around her wrist, showed her the string around his own wrist, and announced that he was ready for a real relationship with her - "strings and all".
John and Evangeline beamed in those scenes, so incredibly tender and affectionate with each other, so completely happy that they were taking this huge step forward together. Michael Easton and Renee Elise Goldsberry gave us everything - nervousness, uncertainty, excitement, eagerness, affection, tenderness. Their partnership is absolutely flawless. It touches us on so many levels, making us laugh and cry right along with John and Evangeline, taking us all along on the ride with them. This is how it’s supposed to be. And Michael and Renee do this for us magnificently each and every time out - seemingly with no effort at all.
And their story doesn't need a triangle to make it heat up. John and Evangeline generate more than enough heat on their own. Another character would only get in the way. No, they need to be just John and Evangeline for awhile longer, letting us watch as Michael and Renee grow more and more in their screen personas and in their story. I know that I speak for many of you out there when I say that this would be riveting enough.
And I don’t care what anyone says to the contrary. It just doesn’t get any better than this – Easton and Goldsberry as John and Evangeline.
Now if only they were on more often…
