Angel Square Hotel, Apartment 6
1: 14 a.m.
If anyone would have told her last March that she'd be here... right now, Evangeline would not have believed them. There was no way for her to have known then that she was a month away from meeting the man who would turn her otherwise controlled existence up-side down and inside -out. She had seen him before talked to him in the Angel Square even, but not until the March 26th meeting when she was sent to the LPD to offer him legal assistance did she really take notice of this man. Upon entering the holding area, John had looked up and walked towards her as she approached his cell. He looked so helpless behind those steel bars, his clothes wrinkled and his face showing signs of tension. She was immediately captivated and knew then that she and John McBain would be friends long after the Haver matter was resolved. Then later at the Law Enforcement dinner, she had decided in an instant that she must kiss him. Now she wasn't really a spontaneous person, so when he'd challenged her about this, she had no immediate comeback.
"I bet you’ve never done a spontaneous thing in your life.” John had challenged.
Damn...he had stumped her. Spontaneity was not high on her list; she was just too well thought out for that. She'd silently thought to herself. Then she saw something spark in his bright blue eyes as he smiled at her and she knew immediately what to do. "Come here..." she said leadingly. She motioned with a finger for John to move closer to her to hear her little secret. If he wanted to play this game Evangeline was ready to show that her talents extended farther than the courtroom. If there was one thing her daddy had taught her, it was how to analyze a situation and come up with the best possible outcome. Evangeline knew how to win...her years as a lawyer had trained her well and now that the "light bulb" had gone on for her, she knew she would be victorious tonight.
John moved in towards her and with the sugary sweet grin playing on her lips Evangeline moved in and devoured his lips with hers. “Dear God...he tastes so good.” she thought. Had she been standing she probably would have melted to the ground.
After the kiss had ended Evangeline couldn't wipe the silly smile off of her face. She giggled as she saw the look on John's handsome face. It was indeed a shame that John McBain was here alone...he should be making some woman's dreams come true. If only she'd known then what was to come for her and Detective McBain.
It had been wonderful getting to know John on a personal level...this was new territory for her. At first it scared her, but now this relationship was her lifeline. If she did not have this man in her life she would be a wreck of a person. She could have never imagined that she and John would end up locked in Mary’s basement and she was far too controlled to have ever thought that they would end up making love on the basement floor that night.
The first bottle of wine was gone before either of them knew what hit them. They drank from the bottle and exchanged stories about their lives, not anything too deep or personal though. That is until the second bottle was opened and John sensed that she was in a sad place. Her father....he was always on her mind and that night at that moment, he was ever present and her heart was heavy thinking about him. Without warning she was sharing her story.
"...And then he died." she took a quick sip of the wine. "
"The next day?" John questioned.
"The day after my first case....” Evangeline remembered it as if it were yesterday. She had felt so absolutely alone on that day she was a lost soul.
"I'm sorry." John could sympathize with Evangeline; he'd had two losses of his own to endure.
"Me too." Evangeline could not believe she'd told John about her father. She had always promised herself that that part of her life would be locked away deep in the recesses of her heart. The pain that came with these memories was simply unbearable." My father demanded so much out of me and I never wanted to disappoint him." And she was proud to admit to herself that she never had let him down.
John intently stared at Evangeline as she sipped from the wine bottle. She sensed that he truly understood her pain and admired her for her perseverance and dogged determination. She felt butterflies flutter in her stomach and realized that she needed to move away from this man, from this discussion.
"I shouldn't of opened that second bottle of wine......" she trailed off as she walked over to the table near the staircase. John had followed and shared his tale of the ghosts that haunted him...his father, Caitlin. "Caitlin’s there too...she doesn't want me to change. Ah, hell who am I foolin', it's me...I'm the one who doesn't want to change." John revelation seemed to surprise even him. Evangeline could not stop looking at him and feeling his pain. Yes, loss was a terrible thing; how anyone survived it was a miracle.
Then came the 'pinky swear' and their eyes locked on one other. What Evangeline say in those crystal blue orbs drew her in and called to her inner spirit. John too was taken a back by the overwhelming need to be near this magnificent woman. He wondered if her lips were as soft and sweet as he was imaging them to be. He was mesmerized. Evangeline's stomach continued to somersault...was it the wine or was it John McBain. She knew the answer and it scared her to death. Before she knew what hit her, John's was devouring her mouth...she was breathless and burning with need, the need to be close to him; to feel his hands on her body and his tongue invading her mouth.
"What is this...what is this?" she asked breathlessly as he pulled back to look into her eyes.
"I don't know?" John ravaged her mouth again, his lips burning her's and causing her heart to pound fiercely. Evangeline was speechless and overwhelmed by the raging emotion within her. John pulled back again long enough to catch her head shaking her response to his question.
"Maybe we should stop?" she questioned when she between kisses.
"Do you want to stop?" John replied as he looked at her hungrily and then devoured her mouth.
No...neither wanted to stop, let the chips fall where they may.
